At ICATT, we enjoy and feel proud of the work we do, i.e. saving lives at the correct time irrespective of the patient’s location. We are known for our work in the field of Air Ambulance services globally. Our wide range of networks enables us to transfer patients all across India and also internationally. But our services are just not limited to patient or organ transportation. Our well-distinguished team is capable of performing life-saving procedures like Advanced Cardiac Life Support, in short ACLS.
What is an ACLS?
The term ACLS refers to a group of specialized techniques that treat and stabilize the patient rapidly in life-threatening conditions. These are intensive medical procedures whose purpose is to restore normal vital signs and alertness. This includes restoring patients in trauma, shock, stroke, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, burns, suffocation etc. ACLS should not be mistaken to treat/cure the underlying disease.
Who can be saved by administering ACLS?
At ICATT, our team administers the ACLS procedures in the following cases:-
- COMA – When the patient has a head injury, seizure, or stroke and is at the risk of slipping into COMA.
- Mineral Imbalance – When there is an Electrolyte imbalance in the bloodstream which means abnormal levels of potassium, sodium, calcium or magnesium
- Heart conditions – For various heart conditions, including heart attack, cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats).
- Respiratory failures – If the patient is unable to breathe or a respiratory failure due to asthma, fluid in the lungs, and a blood clot in the lung.
- Allergies – A life-threatening allergic reaction
- Trauma – Various injuries, including head and spinal cord injuries, severe burns, multiple traumas, major cuts, and suffocation due to smoke inhalation.
Who administers ACLS?
As it is evident from above that ACLS is administered in a wide range of life-threatening cases. Hence, just one field of specialization is not enough. So at ICATT, a group of highly experienced medical and paramedical staff are involved in performing ACLS on a critically ill patient. This includes Cardiac surgeons, Cardiologists, Critical care medicine doctors, Emergency medicine and trauma doctors, and Thoracic surgeons.
How is ACLS administered?
ACLS can be performed anywhere as long as there is a trained team with the correct equipment. ICATT administers ALS and stabilizes the patient first before taking them to a treatment facility. Then, under the guidance of ICATT doctors, paramedics perform ACLS in pre-hospital settings.
The procedure varies from patient to patient. However, ACLS generally includes these steps, which occur very rapidly and often at the same time:
- The need for ACLS is first determined by examining the patient’s alertness, breathing pattern, pulse, and heart rhythm.
- If the need for ACLS arises, then CPR is administered first. The team continues CPR by monitoring the heart rhythm periodically.
- In case of breathing difficulties, a tube is inserted through the mouth or nose—a ventilator attached to the tube through which oxygen is supplied.
- An IV line is started for intake of medications, fluids, and blood transfusions. An ariel line along the wrist artery is also put to monitor blood pressure. Blood for lab tests is also drawn through this ariel line.
- The ACLS team will perform only the necessary treatments.
What is the next step after ACLS?
After administering ACLS, the ICATT team will transfer the patient to a critical care unit where there will receive treatment for the actual cause of their condition.
Recovery time after receiving an ACLS depends on the root cause of your condition, age, overall health, your lifestyle etc. Make sure you do not miss out on all your follow-ups after ACLS. Your doctor is your source to get answers for routine questions and concerns between appointments.
Should the need arise, patients travel with a medical team trained and certified with ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) in ICATT’s special ambulance aircraft. The ACLS team consists of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and respiratory therapists.
We at ICATT also understand that apart from the medical issue on hand, the patient’s family also has to deal with anxiety and worry. Our helpful team will answer all your queries and ensure the safety of the patient and ease the nerves of the near and dear ones of the patient.
